A nonlinear viscoelasticity theory for nematic liquid crystal elastomers

چکیده

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are elastomeric networks with mesogen moieties that can reorient and order in response to thermomechanical loads. Experiments have shown the stress of nematic LCEs is rate-dependent exhibits large hysteresis upon load–unload. In this work, we developed a theory for deformation viscoelastic behavior monodomain separately incorporates hypothesized dissipation mechanisms viscous rotation network deformation. The specialized case homogeneous director field applied investigate contributions uniaxial materials orientation parallel perpendicular loading axis.

Nonlocal model for nematic liquid-crystal elastomers.

We have developed a fully nonlocal model to describe the dynamic behavior of nematic liquid-crystal elastomers. The free energy, incorporating both elastic and nematic contributions, is a function of the material displacement vector and the orientational order parameter tensor. The free energy cost of spatial variations of these order parameters is taken into account through nonlocal interactio...

Linear hydrodynamics and viscoelasticity of nematic elastomers

We develop a continuum theory of linear viscoelastic response in oriented monodomain nematic elastomers. The expression for dissipation function is analogous to the Leslie-Ericksen version of anisotropic nematic viscosity; we propose the relations between the anisotropic rubber moduli and new viscous coefficients. A new dimensionless number is introduced, which describes the relative magnitude ...

Nematic fluctuations and semisoft elasticity in liquid-crystal elastomers.

We give a detailed theory of nematic fluctuations in liquid-crystal elastomers (LCEs) and calculate relaxation rates as obtained by dynamic light scattering (DLS). In ideal LCEs, a nematic state is formed by a spontaneous orientational symmetry breaking of an isotropic state, manifesting itself in an existence of a coupled director-shear soft mode (Goldstone mode). The relaxation rate of the so...

Dynamic Theory of Polydomain Liquid Crystal Elastomers.

When liquid crystal elastomers are prepared without any alignment, disordered polydomain structures emerge as the materials are cooled into the nematic phase. These polydomain structures are often attributed to quenched disorder in the cross-linked polymer network. As an alternative explanation, we develop a theory for the dynamics of the isotropic-nematic transition in liquid crystal elastomer...

Liquid Crystal Elastomers

PREFACE Liquid crystals are unusual materials. As their name suggests, they inhabit the grey area between liquids and solids. They have long range orientational order, typically of the unique axes of their component rod-like or plate molecules. Spatial variations of this average direction of molecular orientation are resisted by so-called curvature (Frank) elasticity. On the other hand liquid c...
